What Requirments do I need?

Postby SamGreenwood on Tue Mar 16, 2010 2:11 pm

I'm new on this site and I'm in desprate need for some real good avice.

I support Blackburn Rovers and have just chose my options for GCSE this is what I put-;

Media Studies - because I heard that this involves writing and analiysing news and writing reports.
Sport Studies - Because it is 75% writing.
History - So I can gain a knowledge of being able to write.
Gepgraphy - I know many different parts of the world and I also enjoy travelling.

I have being Involved in many different Wrestling E-Fed's and have all turned out well, I was just wondering if anyone had any decent infomation about becoming a football Journalist, what requirments it needs, and what grades I need to get in the subjects listed in red above.

P.S

If I'm honest any level of football journalism will do and the only other Journalism I'm intrested in Is Wrestling.

Media Studies is more to do with camera production and films, tbh its' pretty pointless...
Sports Studies is mostly theory...
History is good for developing writing styles and structures...
Geography isn't about countries really, more about tectonic plates and development...

Tbh, GCSE grades dont really have much bearing on your career, as long as you get decent grades in English and Maths - but still, work hard! The grades that will get you into University to study Sports Journalism are your A-Levels...3 C's is normally suffice.

Hope that helps..

Cheers I have already chosen my options and will start them next year and then the year after, so If I stick at it and like you say work hard then maybe my dream may become a reality.

I'm currently in my last year at college, about to go to university.

I undertook Media Studies at GCSE level. It's not completely 'pointless'. It does give you an understanding of the mediation behind newspaper and television journalism.

I also undertook History at GCSE level. As you say, it will prove to be a very good subject for developing your writing skills.

I took both these subjects on at AS and A2 level when I went to college. If you're not fond of taking English, I've found that a humanities subject like History, or Politics, is widely welcomed as a good alternative.

You ask about the requirements needed; apart from a decent degree, experience is vital. Look towards your local newspaper, the sports' section perhaps, and ask for any work experience available.

It will look great for your C.V.
